Wellsford farmer Greg McCracken was the successful candidate in the Fonterra Shareholders' Council by-election in Southern Northland.

McCracken, who has been farming in the Northland region for more than 30 years will take up his new role immediately.

Shareholders' Council chairman, Duncan Coull, welcomed McCracken to the council and congratulated him on his election.

"Succession is important for our council and I look forward to working with Greg. I trust he will represent his shareholders and the council with diligence and integrity," he says.

"I also acknowledge our departing Councillor Tracey Bryan whose efforts on behalf of farmers during her time on the council speak volumes about her commitment to them and the role.

"The council wishes Tracey well for all her future endeavours."
