Pig-headed

Written by  The Hound

Your canine crusader understands that the Government’s decision to not allow butchers to operate during the lockdown period is going to cause some major animal welfare issues on many pig farms around the country.

Despite numerous pleas from the pork industry for a relaxation of the rules, which has seen the nation’s butcher shops have closed down, the Government and its officials have remained pig-headedly stubborn on the issue.

Although after some pressure, it reluctantly bowed a little by allowing independent butchers to make home deliveries.

However, NZ Pork reckons it’s debatable whether this move will alleviate the surplus of pigs on farm and the resulting issues this will cause. Just why independent butchers, unlike dairies, aren’t allowed to open – so long as they can take the necessary precautions – is beyond your old mate.
