Hartnell up for hero award

Written by

JOHN HARTNELL, chairman of Federated Farmers Bees and a former Feds national board member, is a semi-finalist in the 2012 Kiwibank Local Heroes Award, recognising his work as "generalissimo" of the Farmy Army in the wake of Christchurch's February and June earthquakes.

"From tragedy came a sense of community because the Farmy Army has helped to build friendships and understanding," says Feds president Bruce Wills. "At its heart was John Hartnell."

The Local Heroes Award is part of the New Zealander of the Year Awards. Three finalists in each category will be announced January 16. Winners announced February 16.
