NZW Fellows: Sir Sam Neill Remembered for His Deep Love of New Zealand Wine
Sir Sam Neill made an extraordinary mark on the world, and on the world of New Zealand wine.
After nearly a decade as Coal Pit Winemaker, Anika Willner has been appointed as General Manager of the family-owned Gibbston estate, while retaining her winemaking role.
Estate owner Rosie Dunphy said the appointment formally recognises the role Anika has naturally grown into since joining the company in 2018, including its commitment to organic farming.
“Anika knows every aspect of Coal Pit from the ground up. She has cared for this vineyard and the creation of its wines with extraordinary energy and vision.”
Originally from Ohio in the United States, Anika says Coal Pit has been “home” for much of her winemaking life.
“I have grown alongside this vineyard, and I feel a real responsibility to care for what has been built here while continuing to ask what it can become.”
