Drop in the bucket?

Written by  Milking It

Not everyone is impressed with the $500,000 fund announced by the Government last week.

The fund will provide advisory services to “help farmers and growers prepare their businesses to recover from drought”.

Opposition agriculture spokesman Todd Muller describes it as “merely a drop in the bucket”.

He wants the Government to help contribute to farmers’ rising feed costs or general business costs.

“Most farmers already know what is needed to help their business recover and it is insulting for the Government to tell them they simply need to seek more advice to get through the drought.”

Editorial: A Sensible Decision

OPINION: For thousands of Southland farmers, this week would have tipped them into the non-compliant category when it comes to following regional freshwater plan rules. But the Government has stepped in to give them the clarity they deserve.
