Since arriving on New Zealand’s shores in 1976, the Hilux has been seen of farms, building sites and back roads, becoming a familiar part of how rural and more recently, Kiwis work and live.

The war for supremacy in the ute market is still being waged by market leaders Toyota and Ford, with the Hilux and Ranger.

When the 8^th generation Toyota Hilux arrived in late 2015, it was a major departure from the Hilux of old.

With Ford holding the reins of the ute market since about 2014, it was always going to be a case of when – not if – Toyota NZ would deliver a model to compete.

Toyota’s Hilux-based Fortuner SUV line-up has had an aggressive upgrade in New Zealand with the addition of a TRD (Toyota Racing Development) enhanced version. 

While the Toyota Hilux is the ‘go to’ for anyone looking for a no-nonsense ute, it’s probably been losing some ground to Ford and Holden.

It wouldn't be speaking out of turn to call the Toyota Hi-Lux New Zealand's favourite ute.

The light truck market is 20% of the new car market in New Zealand, and the Toyota Hi-Lux has held top position for 27 years.
