NZ Winegrowers Welcomes Alcohol Regulation Amendment Bill

Written by  Staff Reporters

New Zealand Winegrowers has welcomed the introduction of the Sale and Supplu of Alcohol (Improving Alcohol Regulation) Amendment Bill.

"These proposals will help to simplify the licensing system for many businesses", says Philip Gregan, NZW Chief Executive.

"We often hear from our members about the challenges involved in alcohol licensing. While it is importan that there are guardrails in place around the sale and supply of alcohol, many of the current requirements have become overly bureaucratic and technical. The vast majority of New Zealanders consume alcohol responsibly, and the regulatory framework should reflect that."

Concerns over Bill

The new Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act (Community Participation) Amendment Bill may have unintended and serious consequences for New Zealand wine tourism, with licensing authorities able to decline to renew a licence where it is inconsistent with conditions on location or licence density in a relevant Local Alcohol Policy (LAP).
