Cow kill shaping up to be one of the lowest

Written by

Early Beef + Lamb figures suggested a 17,000 head lift in the North Island cow kill this season. Now it seems it won't get anywhere close and in fact could be much lower than historical levels.

To date the North Island cow kill stands at 352,000 - 130,000 head down on the same period last season. In the last 3 weeks the cow kill has stabilised around 26,000 to 27,000 suggesting we have seen the peak. The cow kill tends to seasonally drop from now with the remaining kill to 30 Sept historically tracking around 160,000 head. At these levels the North Island cow kill would finish up around 510,000 head, well down on the earlier expectations of 645,000 head. Meat companies were banking on a big run of cows this season, chances are their focus may now switch to something they can get their hands on.
