The numbers aren't huge and despite healthy feed levels, prices for the 4-5yr ewes were back $40-$46/head while the mixed age (MA) ewes were back by up to $20/hd on last year. It is not unexpected however that prices would be softer this season. 12 months ago schedule prices for lambs were sky rocketing and had already hit $7.40/kg in the North Island. Right now with lamb prices languishing in the mid to high $5.00/kg there seems to be less enthusiasm and cash about to bid the market for in lamb ewes much higher.
A few scanned in lamb (SIL) ewes hit the saleyards last week, although in small numbers. It will be interesting to see how this market pans out when the numbers do start to flow. Mixed age scanned in lamb ewes at Stortford last week were $148-150/hd with a 158% scanning. There was good interest at Matawhero last Friday. Mixed age scanned in lamb ewes were $140/hd on ave while a line of scanned in lamb two tooths and four tooths fetched $143/hd. The first of the scanned in lamb ewes were sold at Feilding last week. Mixed age scanned in lamb ewes made $150-160/hd with scanning rates 158-166%. A line of scanned in lamb two tooths made $151/hd (148% scanning) and four tooths $162/hd (154% scanning).
