New Zealand strong wool, renowned for its use in carpets, is set to become world famous for a new use – on people's feet.

Agriculture will remain under increasing scrutiny from regulators and consumers and it is up to the industry to educate them, says Landcorp's general manager of people and capabilities, Anna Cassel-Brown.

The numbers are almost frightening – 59 farms, 55,000 cows and 20 million kg milksolids a year. That’s the contribution Landcorp makes to New Zealand’s dairy industry and the nation’s economy. 

Much is said about the need for succession planning and leadership in New Zealand’s primary industries. The baby boomer bosses are gradually slipping out of the top jobs and into semi-retirement to take on directorships and ultimately exit the industry.

The exceptionally low milk price has dealt a blow to Landcorp, forcing it to post a half year profit to December 31, 2014 of just $1 million, down 92% on the same period in the previous year. 

State farmer Landcorp is reviewing its full-year profit forecast in the face of a lower milk payout and dry weather.
