App puts herd data in farmer’s pocket

Written by

FARMERS TICKING a survey box marked ‘animal details’ guided LIC in its latest choice of smartphone app, said the company as it launched its Minda Lookup recently.

Access to herd records from a mobile topped a survey LIC ran at National Fieldays in June.

Minda Lookup is LIC’s second mobile app this year, following Minda Calving launched in June.

LIC’s general manager of farm systems, Rob Ford, says farmers at Fieldays were asked to rate pasture covers, body condition score, movements, health treatments, mating and tag information. An app for animal details was the clear favourite.

“With Minda Lookup they’ll be able to look up and review [data on] cow information and history, such as production, mating, health, BW and PW.”

The app offers four areas of information: essentials, production, peproduction and health.

Essentials includes cow BW, PW, expected calving details, recent herd test information
and mating and health events. The other three tabs – production, reproduction and
health – give more detail on these subjects for each animal.

The app downloads on the latest Android and Apple (iOS7) devices, free from Google Play and the Apple App Store.

LIC says it will develop the apps voted for by farmers at National Fieldays.  Ford says the co-op plans to develop the parts from Minda Pro and Minda Mobile most relevant to onfarm use. Apps are the most requested item from farmers getting in touch with the co-op, Ford says.

“Farmers… don’t want their records confined to their office, where record keeping and decisionmaking often becomes another job to do later. They want to be able to have it with them… in their pocket so they can review and update in real-time.”
