Aussies cry foul

Written by

Fonterra farmer suppliers in New Zealand are pretty happy with the $7/kgMS opening price for the new season.

However, Aussie farmers supplying Fonterra are crying foul. Fonterra Australia announced a closing price forecast for next season, starting July 1, of A$5.50 - $6.20 ($5.99/kgMS to $6.75/kgMS). An opening price will come later, Fonterra Australia says. Suppliers say the Fonterra price range is too vague. Some farmers think it’s the Canadian processor Saputo’s emergence as the biggest Australian dairy company that is causing jitters in the Fonterra Australia camp. It gives the impression that Fonterra Australia is sitting on the fence waiting for the opposition to announce a price, said one supplier.
