A unique partnership between a Marlborough Sounds wildlife sanctuary and a major wine company is helping develop a slice of nature right on the doorstep of the township of Picton.

With 23,000 hectares of productive vineyard in Marlborough, it is not surprising that New Zealand’s largest wine region should have a plethora of grape varieties. More than 33 in total, from Albarino to Viognier. But one tiny estate, has a total of 29 of those varieties growing in just 11.5 hectares.

Ivan Sutherland, co-owner of Dog Point Wines in Marlborough, has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the board of Wine Marlborough.

From humble beginnings in 1994, Marlborough’s Whitehaven Wine Company this year celebrates its “coming of age” with its 21st vintage, at the same time moving into new facilities. 

The upcoming International Sauvignon Blanc Celebration in February 2016, will be  special in more ways than one to one Marlborough producer. The event will also mark the 30th anniversary of the region’s entry onto the world stage.

Marlborough is about to get its first ever degree course aimed specifically at the wine industry.

With close to 24,000 hectares of vineyards in Marlborough, the time is right to identify just what is planted, and where. That’s the view of Wine Marlborough’s GM Marcus Pickens and Cloudy Bay winemaker, Nick Lane.

A RESOLVE to eradicate the pest Chilean Needle Grass (CNG) from Marlborough within the next 15 years has resulted in the formation of the community-driven Chilean Needle Grass Action Group (CNGAG).
