Volatility in earnings is the result of prices staying high for milk-price products, says Fonterra chairman John Wilson.

Fonterra's $7/kgMS opening milk price is at the top end of the range seen by market followers and analysts.

Dairy farmers know early starts well. Rob and Di Bridgeman are also early finishers.

Fonterra farmers will get an extra 20c/kgMS for milk supplied to the co-op this season.

Fonterra has announced an opening forecast Farmgate Milk Price of $7/kgMS for the 2018/19 season starting June 1.
